Considering I made a list of 70+ singles I liked this year, I think I’ve done a good job of narrowing it down to a top 35 since I don’t want to think about why number 65 deserves to be higher than 66.
Here are 35 singles I thoroughly enjoyed listening to in 2017:
35. The Killers – The Man
After a brilliant second studio album, Brandon decided to get back with the lads and release a new Killers album after several years. The lead single, ‘The Man’ was the treat us fans needed.
34. Jessie Ware – Alone
With no surprise, Jessie Ware delivered another slick album with the type of love songs we actually want to hear.
33. Stefflon Don – Hurtin’ Me (feat. French Montana)
Last year I had my eye on Stefflon as I was routing for big things for her to happen in 2017. After a great debut mixtape, ‘Hurtin’ Me’ became her first chart success and is the beginning of even bigger things yet to come in 2018.
32. Maggie Lindemann – Pretty Girl (Cheat Codes x CADE Remix)
Every year we get a couple of these singing Instagram girls that are supposedly the next big thing in pop. Pia Mia, Madison Beer… Maggie Lindemann. The Cheat Codes x CADE remix of ‘Pretty Girl’ is a fucking bop and was a huge success around the world. I really like Maggie’s voice and her other songs that she’s put out so far. Her latest song ‘Obsessed’ didn’t quite make this countdown but be sure to check it out.
31. Ray BLK – Doing Me
BBC Sound of 2017 winner Ray BLK is one of my favourite breakthrough acts of the year. Her mixtape was so diverse and this single ‘Doing Me’ has such a nostalgic vibe to it that I can’t help but not love it.
30. Kendrick Lamar – Humble
Another genius song and video from Kendrick. Need I say more?
29. Lil Yachty – Better (feat. Stefflon Don)
While Despacito was everyone else’s song of the summer *eye roll*, this was mine! Yachty and Stefflon delivering a chilled summer vibe on an Akon-esque song.
28. Calvin Harris – Feels (feat. Katy Perry and Big Sean)
Another song of the summer. Calvin has been nailing those tropical tunes recently.
27. Miley Cyrus – Younger Now
‘Younger Now’ is so dreamy and genuine. I love this song and video a lot. Can I say underrated?
26. Calvin Harris – Slide (feat. Frank Ocean and Migos)
The best thing Frank Ocean has done in recent years. Best Calvin Harris song of 2017.
25. Paramore – Hard Times
This colorful 80’s inspired Paramore single made my earlier part of this year. A BOP.
24. G-Eazy – No Limit (feat. A$AP Rocky and Cardi B)
Big in 2017 and probably even bigger in 2018. So many fire verses.
23. P!nk – Beautiful Trauma
Probably the best song on P!nk’s latest album.
22. Miguel – Told You So
This song gives me all types of feels. I need to witness this live.
21. Marshmello – Silence (feat. Khalid)
Marshmello is one of 2017’s hottest producers and this collab with Khalid who is one of my favourite new acts this year really showcases why I love his voice so much.
20. Billie Eilish – Bellyache
Billie Eilish is insane. I am going to copy all her looks in twenty eighteen fyi. Bellyache just showcases how even more exciting this artist could become.
19. Alma – Chasing Highs
The world still can’t get enough of Scandinavian pop as more of their females keep emerging. Alma’s ‘Chasing Highs’ was hard to escape if you listened to Radio 1 during the first part of this year and rightfully so.
18. Sigrid – Plot Twist
Sigrid is another one of those emerging Scandi gals. She’s delivered a number of great pop songs this year and her live shows prove she has many more to come. ‘Plot Twist’ still remains my favourite she’s released so far. SHOTS FIRED.
17. Kelly Clarkson – Love So Soft
When Kelly Clarkson dropped her new single and video in September I remember being so happy she was back on form. ‘Piece By Piece’ was an underwhelming era and ‘Love So Soft’ is the Kelly we all have been missing. The music video is one of her best ever.
16. Paloma Faith – Crybaby
I was really weary on whether Paloma’s return to music after becoming a mother was going to be any good as she announced that her album was done before she got pregnant therefore I assumed everything would sound 2 years old. Instead, ‘Crybaby’ is a sweet mellow timeless pop song that I can’t get enough of.
15. Cardi B – Bodak Yellow
Rap song of the year. Obvs.
14. Anne-Marie – Ciao Adios
One of the best singles released from the first part of this year. Anne-Marie will hopefully get on with it and release her album in the new year.
13. Halsey – Bad At Love
This song gave me that instant “this has to be a single” feel when giving Halsey’s album a first spin.
12. Mabel – Finders Keepers (feat. Kojo Funds)
11. N.E.R.D – Lemon (feat. Rihanna)
N.E.R.D feat Rih? DAMN. Rihanna’s got BARS!
10. SZA – The Weekend
SZA is the R&B chick we’ve been waiting for, for AGES. ‘The Weekend’ is Aaliyah/Janet type of amazingness.
09. SZA – Love Galore (feat. Travis Scott)
Dark and sexy. SZA’s music really paints a picture in your head. Travis Scott’s verse is also straight up fire.
08. Kelela – LMK
One of the most underrated singles of the year. Kelela delivering a unique sexy futuristic electronic R&B sound to the table.
07. Miguel – Sky Walker (feat. Travis Scott)
One of the most feel good songs. The beat gets you hooked and before you know it you’ve had it on repeat all morning. The perfect lead single for Miguel’s latest record.
06. Louisa Johnson – Best Behaviour
The UK have been playing Louisa Johnson dirty. ‘Best Behaviour’ is THE most underrated pop song of the year. I personally think it should have been a number one however top 5 is more reasonable. Despite not cracking the top 40, it still managed to sell the same amount of copies a top 10 single from The Saturdays would have sold. At least there’s that..
05. Little Mix – Touch
Despite being out at the end of last year, I purposely didn’t put it on my countdown last year to put it on my list this year. ‘Touch’ is the best single from ‘Glory Days’ by FAR and despite a tacky music video, it will remain one of their most iconic singles.
04. The Weeknd – Reminder
There is always that one song that doesn’t instantly connect with you on album and then months later you find yourself becoming obsessed with it and judging yourself for not rating it in the first place. ‘Reminder’ is THAT song for me this year. ‘Starboy’ was my album of the year last year and Abel’s ‘Legend of the Fall’ tour was the best show I attended this year. I love the lyrical content of ‘Reminder’ and how the song sets itself apart from most of Abel’s work. The video is super cool too.
03. Lorde – Perfect Places
‘Perfect Places’ is my favourite Lorde single by far. It’s prodiction and lyrics are so perfect that it takes me to a whole new world when I listen to it.
02. Dua Lipa – New Rules
The fuck boy anthem of 2017. The meme queen. (Gemma Collins who?)
Dua Lipa’s ‘New Rules’ is the best thing that could have happened to the charts this year after a male dominated year. The first number one from a female in the UK since Adele’s ‘Hello’ in 2015?! Thank fuck for Dua this year.
The 80’s inspired Initial Talk remix is also 10/10 too.
01. Miley Cyrus – Malibu
I kind of knew this was my favourite song of the year come around September after a summer holiday with this song on repeat. Miley’s ‘Malibu’ is so dreamy and timeless and will still sound great in 10 years time.
Every remix of this single are all great. My personal favourite was the Tiesto one.
