If you keep up with the latest trends and artists in music then you should have known who Kehlani is for some time now. The soulful R&B singer made a huge impact on the scene after her second mixtape ‘You Should Be Here’ dropped. The mixtape which is album quality worthy got her a Grammy nomination for ‘Best R&B Album’ in 2016 and since then has grown a huge following that are considered the ‘Tsunami Mob’. Her raspy soulful vocals and her storytelling lyrics have connected to an audience of millions online.
While she has been touring throughout the years worldwide and has been dropping hot music videos online and been collaborating with big artists like Charlie Puth, G-Eazy, Little Simz and Zayn the only thing missing in her career was the long awaited debut album. Titled ‘SweetSexySavage’, Kehlani signed a deal with Atlantic Records and released her record on January 27th 2017.
The album received mainly positive reviews from critics, generating a Metacritic score of 71, which ranks as Kehlani’s second-highest score after her universally acclaimed mixtape ‘You Should Be Here’ from 2015.
The albums key tracks:
After the albums spoken word introduction, ‘Keep On’ kicks in and has an instant finger clicking beat and Kehlani’s signature way of owning up to being wrong in such a confident manor. As she sings “You just keep on taking me back, and I don’t know why you do ’cause I’m no good to you”, we get that sense of honesty Kehlani has had throughout her career.
Kehlani ain’t playing on this one. She’s straight up flirting wanting a man’s attention and gives zero fucks. The care-free track is refreshing and is the albums answer to the song ‘The Way’ taken from the YSBH mixtape.
As the track opens with lyrics of Akon’s ‘Don’t Matter’, you know you’re onto a win of a song. The production is some of the best heard on the album. The acoustic guitar you can hear in the background is pure bliss as Kehlani’s sings about loving who she wants and saying “fuck it!” to those who have a problem.
‘CRZY’ dropped in the summer and it’s exactly that.. a summer jam! It’s one of the albums more upbeat numbers that you can actually dance to like seen in the music video. Doing what she does best, Kehlani drops those care-free honest lyrics throughout the song. “If I gotta be a bitch, I’mma be a bad one“, “All this shit I’ve been through and it made me more real than assassin. I kill ’em, I kill ’em, I kill ’em with compassion”, etc.
Do U Dirty
‘Do U Dirty’ shows the darker side to Kehlani as she sings about her independence telling someone to not get too hooked and attached to her. “You think you love me now, I think you should be worried” as she continuously sings “I’mma do u dirty“.
Kehlani’s pride and independence continues straight after ‘Do U Dirty’ as the intro to ‘Too Much’ is “Shoulda told that nigga in the beginning. If he thought he was bout to play me
Nigga, don’t play yourself, nigga. He fucking with the baddest, the rawest, the realest nigga” spoken confidently. Kehlani sings in the chorus “Too much of a woman. Too much of a bad ass bitch. Too much of a boss, baby, it’s your loss. Now you gotta live with it” which confirms she doesn’t have a care in the world and that she is happy ridin’ solo!
The production has a 90’s Timbaland vibe when he was producing records for Aaliyah, Missy Elliott and Ginuwine at the beginning of his career.
I Wanna Be
It’s always the bonus/deluxe tracks that remain some of the best isn’t it? ‘I Wanna Be’ easily has the hottest beat on the record. Pure flames emoji and all that.
Overall album rating: 7/10
